Okiden Kigyo Co., Ltd. / KTX Corporation / Park Homes Okinawa Co., Ltd.
Okiden Kigyo Co., Ltd.(hereafter Okiden Kigyo; head office: Urasoe City, Okinawa),
KTX Corporation(hereafter KTX; head office: Konan City, Aichi), andPark Homes Okinawa Co., Ltd.(hereafter Park Homes Okinawa; head office: Tomigusuku City, Okinawa) have jointly developed a residential trailer home, with the aim of resolving the severe housing shortage in island regions and raising the standard of disaster response (strengthening disaster resilience).
■ Background: the structural housing problems islands face
In island regions of Okinawa Prefecture, the following structural problems have become apparent.
- A shortage of move-in-ready housing
- The need to build the living environment that relocation and settlement require
- Rising material and labor costs, and longer construction schedules
- Time and cost problems in securing emergency temporary housing in a disaster
■ Overview of this initiative
In this initiative we developed a residential trailer home that treats housing not as a mere building but as
adaptable infrastructureusable in both normal times and disasters.
Key features
- Deployable on a short lead time (as little as about three months)
- Mobility: it can be moved and redeployed
- Multi-purpose (housing, tourism, disaster response bases and more)
- Cost optimization through production on the main island
■ Each company's role
This project is driven by a collaborative structure that draws on each company's expertise.
Okiden Kigyo Co., Ltd.
As a community-rooted infrastructure company with a business base and personnel on each of Okinawa's islands, it drives the project with on-the-ground understanding and handles coordination with local governments
KTX Corporation
As a company with high-precision manufacturing technology honed in die production, it underpins the structural design and production base of the trailer homes
Park Homes Okinawa Co., Ltd.
As the only company manufacturing trailer homes in Okinawa Prefecture, with deep knowledge of the local climate and way of life, it provides design and manufacturing technology optimized for the living environment
■ How it can be used
This trailer home is not single-purpose; it is operating infrastructure that can be used across policy areas, in normal times and in disasters alike.
🏠 Use in normal times
- Housing to promote relocation and settlement
- Staff accommodation
- Workation and training facilities
- Tourism and extended-stay bases
🚨 Use in a disaster
- Emergency temporary housing
- Disaster response bases
- Medical and relief bases
- Facilities supporting disaster victims
This delivers a sustainable investment model that does not create public assets nobody uses.
■ Three technical features that withstand Okinawa's harsh natural environment
This trailer home is designed around Okinawa's distinctive climate and environmental conditions.
- High safety from structural analysis and wind-resistant design not normally carried out for trailer homes (typhoon protection)
- Anti-rust and anti-corrosion design for a salt-laden environment
- Long-term use through planned maintenance
■ What comes next
The three companies will pursue the following and contribute to sustainable community building in Okinawa.
- Proposing adoption to island local governments in Okinawa Prefecture and advancing demonstration projects
- Building a maintenance structure in partnership with local companies
- Rolling it out as disaster-response infrastructure
- Extending application into tourism and regional development
